# Overview

> The phone numbers behind your inboxes, how to buy one step by step, and how to bring an existing number across.

Every inbox in Dialbird is a phone number, so getting set up is really about choosing the right numbers for your business. You manage them all in one place, under **Settings**, then **Phone numbers**. From here you can add a number, open any number to change its settings, or bring an existing number across.

## Buying a number

Click **Add a new number** and Dialbird walks you through it. The panel is titled "Select a phone number and configure your inbox", and you fill it in from the top down.

1. **Pick the country.** Choose the **United States**, the **United Kingdom**, or **Canada**. Dialbird starts you on your own country, and only lets you buy in the countries your workspace is allowed to use. Other countries show as **Coming soon**.
2. **Pick the number type.** The types on offer change with the country, because each country has its own kinds of number. See [Local numbers](/phone-numbers/local-numbers), [Toll-free and freephone numbers](/phone-numbers/toll-free-numbers), and [UK numbers](/phone-numbers/uk-numbers) for what each one is best for.
3. **Search for a number.** Use the **Search by area code or city** box to find a number tied to the area you want. Hit **Refresh** to pull up a different set.
4. **Choose one.** Pick a number from the list. It shows at the top as your **Selected Number**.
5. **Name the inbox.** Give it an **icon** and an **inbox name** (something like Sales or Support), so you can tell it apart in your sidebar at a glance. The name is required.
6. **Check the price and confirm.** Dialbird shows the monthly cost for the number before you commit, so there are no surprises. Click **Add Number** to finish.

The new number appears in your sidebar straight away, ready to take calls and texts.

  Which countries you can buy in depends on where your workspace is based. A UK workspace can buy UK, US, and Canadian numbers. A US or Canadian workspace can buy US and Canadian numbers.

## Setting a number up

Each number has its own settings: recording, voicemail, business hours, who can use it, and more. Changing one number never affects the others. See [Number settings](/phone-numbers/number-settings).
