# Sign up

> Create your Dialbird account and get your first business number in a few minutes.

Getting started with Dialbird takes only a few minutes, and it begins with a phone number. You pick a number, create your account around it, and you're ready to make and take calls. There's nothing to install to get going: the first steps happen right in your web browser.

## Before you start

There isn't much to have ready. It helps to know:

* **Which town or area code** you'd like your number to have, so customers see a familiar local number.
* **Whether you're setting up on your own or for a team.** Either is fine, and you can change your mind later.

You don't need your existing number for this part. If you already have a business number you want to keep, you sign up first and bring it across afterwards. See [Already got a number elsewhere?](#already-got-a-number-elsewhere) below.

## Signing up

1. **Go to Dialbird.** You'll be shown a **number that's ready for you**, picked based on where you are. You'll see it on the welcome screen under "Your new number is ready".
2. **Choose your number.** Happy with the one you see? Click **Continue**. Want a different one? Click **Choose a different number**, then search by area code or town and pick another before continuing.
3. **Create your account.** Continuing takes you to the account screen, where you set up your login. If you already have an account, use the **Sign in** link instead.
4. **Tell Dialbird who it's for.** You'll be asked whether you're setting up **For my team** or **Just for me**. Pick whichever fits. Choosing "Just for me" doesn't shut the door on your team: you can still invite people later.

That's you set up, with a number ready to use. From here you can [install the apps](/getting-started/install-apps) and start calling and texting.

<Note>
  **Needs checking:** confirm exactly how the account step works (whether it's an email code, a password, or "sign in with Google") and add the specific steps here.
</Note>

## Choosing a different number

If the number you're offered isn't quite right, **Choose a different number** opens a picker where you can:

* **Search by area code or town** to find a number that looks local to your customers.
* **Switch the country** between the ones Dialbird supports.
* **Pick a different type** of number where more than one is available.

There's a whole guide to the choices here. See [Choosing a number](/getting-started/choosing-a-number).

## Already got a number elsewhere?

You don't have to give up a number your customers already know. You can bring your existing business number across after you've signed up, which is called porting. Sign up with a temporary number first, then move your real number over. See [Porting your number](/getting-started/porting/overview).
