# Sharing contacts

> Choose who on your team can see and message a contact, or a whole list.

Not every contact needs to be seen by everyone. Sharing lets you decide who a contact is visible to: keep it private to yourself, open it up to the whole team, or share it with just certain people or inboxes. It's how you make sure the right colleagues can reach a customer without cluttering everyone else's list.

## Sharing one contact

To set who can see a single contact:

1. Open the contact, click the **⋯**, and choose **Manage access**. (This option only shows on contacts you own.)
2. In **Manage Access**, choose who to share with:
   * **Everyone** in your workspace
   * Certain **Inboxes** (tick the ones you want)
   * Certain **Users** (there's a search box if your team is large)
3. Click **Save**.

If you don't share it, it stays private to you, and the contact shows as **Not shared** on its details. When it is shared, the details show the owner and either **Everyone in workspace** or the people and inboxes it's shared with.

  To share several contacts in one go, select them on the Contacts list and click **Manage access** in the bottom bar. This appears only when you own every contact you've selected.

## Sharing a list

A [list](/contacts/managing-contacts) can be shared the same way. Open the list, click its **⋮** menu, and choose **Share list** to pick **Everyone**, certain **Inboxes**, or certain **Users**. Handy when a whole team needs to work the same group of customers, for example before a [broadcast](/messaging/broadcast).

## Setting a default for new contacts

Rather than choosing every time you add someone, you can set what happens by default. Go to **Settings**, then **Contacts**, and set **Default contact sharing** to:

* **Everyone** in the workspace
* **Selected** members or inboxes
* **None**, private by default

You can still change the sharing on any individual contact afterwards.

  Contacts synced from your phone's address book are always private by default, whatever this setting says. You can still share them one by one.
