# Importing contacts

> Bring your whole customer list in from a spreadsheet, matching columns as you go.

Already keep your customers in a spreadsheet? Instead of typing everyone in one by one, you can bring the whole list into Dialbird in one go and start calling and texting them straight away.

## Getting your file ready

Your spreadsheet needs to be saved as a **.csv** file. Most spreadsheet programs can do this: look for "Save as" or "Export" and pick CSV. The first row should be your column headings (like Name, Mobile, Company), because that's what you'll match up in a moment.

## Importing a CSV

1. In **Contacts**, click the **+** and choose **Import CSV** (or go to **Settings**, then **Contacts**, and click **Import a CSV file**).
2. Pick your file. Dialbird reads it and opens **Import Contacts from CSV**.
3. Now match your spreadsheet columns to Dialbird's fields. The fields are grouped into tabs so it stays tidy:
   * **Basic Info**: **First Name**, **Last Name**, and **Phone Number**. These three are required, marked with a red **\***.
   * **Contact**: Email, Phone Number 2, Phone Number 3.
   * **Work**: Company, Role.
   * **Location**: Country, City.
   * **Additional**: Website, Notes.
4. For each field, use the dropdown to pick which column in your spreadsheet it matches. Leave any you don't have blank.
5. Choose who to **Share with** (see [Sharing contacts](/contacts/contact-sharing)). If you don't pick anyone, the imported contacts are shared with everyone in your workspace.
6. Click **Import \[number] Contacts**.

When it's done, Dialbird tells you how many contacts came in, and flags any rows that couldn't be imported so you can check them.

<Note>
  Names, phone numbers, email, company, website, and notes come across on import. The **Role**, **Country**, and **City** fields can be matched in the importer but aren't saved yet, so if you need those, add them on each contact afterwards.
</Note>

## Stopping duplicates

If you'd rather not end up with the same person saved twice, an owner or admin can go to **Settings**, then **Contacts**, and turn on **Prevent duplicate contacts**. After that, any import that would add a phone number you've already got is blocked.
