# Warm transfer

> Have a quick word with your colleague before you connect the caller.

A warm transfer lets you talk to your colleague first, before the caller is connected to them. It is the polite way to pass someone on, so your colleague knows what the call is about instead of picking up cold. In Dialbird this is called **Merge call**.

## Doing a warm transfer

1. On the call, open the **⋯** menu and choose **Merge call**.
2. Pick the teammate you want to consult.
3. Press **Start consult**. Your caller is put on hold automatically while you talk.
4. When your colleague picks up, you will see **Connected, ready to merge**.
5. Now choose:
   * **Merge calls** to bring the caller back in, so all three of you are talking. See [Group calls](/calling/conference-calling/group-calls).
   * **Cancel** to drop the consult and go back to the caller on your own, as if nothing happened.

## Worth knowing

* **Team members only.** A warm transfer is for consulting someone on your team. To send a call to an outside number, use a [cold transfer](/calling/conference-calling/cold-transfer).
* **The caller is held for you.** While you are consulting, the caller waits on hold, and the manual hold control is locked until the consult ends.
* **Your colleague has about 40 seconds** to answer before the consult attempt ends.
