# Hold and hold music

> Put a caller on hold, with hold music, while you sort something out.

Putting a caller on hold gives you a moment to check something or grab a colleague, without hanging up. While they wait, they hear hold music, so they know they are still connected.

## Putting someone on hold

Press the hold button in the call controls, or open the **⋯** menu and choose **Hold**. The call shows **HOLD** and the timer stops. To bring them back, choose **Resume**.

## What the caller hears

While they are on hold, the caller hears **hold music**, rather than silence, so it is clear the call is still live.

## What you can't do while on hold

Holding a caller pauses a couple of other controls until you resume:

* **Mute** is unavailable.
* **Recording** cannot be started.

## Hold during a warm transfer

When you use [Merge call](/calling/conference-calling/warm-transfer) to consult a colleague, Dialbird puts the caller on hold for you automatically. While that consult is running, the hold control is locked, so you cannot take the caller off hold until you merge the calls or cancel.

## If the hold button won't work

You cannot hold a call that has not connected yet. If you try, Dialbird tells you:

> Cannot hold, call not ready yet.

Wait for the call to connect, then try again.
