# Cold transfer

> Hand a live call straight to someone else and drop out.

A cold transfer hands the call straight over. You pass it on and you are out of it, with no need to explain anything first. It is the quickest way to get a caller to the right person when you already know where they need to go.

## Transferring a call

1. On the call, open the **⋯** menu and choose **Transfer call**, or press the transfer button in the call controls.
2. Choose where it is going:
   * **To member.** A teammate. You then pick which of their inboxes it lands in.
   * **To inbox.** Everyone assigned to that inbox is rung, so whoever is free can take it.
   * **Custom number.** Any phone number at all, in full international format like `+44 7700 900123`.
3. If you like, use **+ Add a message** to leave a note for whoever picks up. This is not available when transferring to a plain number.
4. Press **Transfer**.

Dialbird rings the destination and then tells you how it went: **Transfer complete**, **Transfer pending**, or **Transfer failed**. If it fails, you can **Retry** or go **Back**.

<Note>
  When you transfer to a member, you also choose an inbox they can access. If you pick one they are not on, the transfer will not go through.
</Note>

## Worth knowing

* **The destination has about 40 seconds to answer** before the attempt gives up.
* **You need a customer on the call first.** The transfer button is greyed out until then.
* If you want to speak to your colleague before handing over, use a [warm transfer](/calling/conference-calling/warm-transfer) instead.
