# Call recording

> Record your calls automatically or on the fly, tell callers when they're recorded, and find recordings again afterwards.

Call recording keeps a copy of what was said, so you can check the details of a quote, settle a "he said, she said", or remind yourself exactly what a customer asked for. Dialbird can record every call to a number automatically, or you can start recording part-way through a call yourself. This page covers both, how to let people know they're being recorded, and where the recordings end up.

## Recording every call automatically

Recording is set up **per number**, not per person. Turn it on for a number and every call to and from it is recorded, so you never have to remember to press a button.

To switch it on:

1. Go to **Settings**, then **Phone numbers**.
2. Click the number you want to record.
3. Under **Call recording**, turn on **Auto-record calls**.

That records both incoming and outgoing calls. You can't record only incoming, or only outgoing.

When auto-record is on, recording starts the moment the call connects, and you'll see a red **REC** badge in the call window for the whole call.

## Recording part-way through a call

You can also start recording once you're already talking, which is handy when a call turns into something you want a record of.

Click the record button (the red circle) in the call controls, or open the **⋯** menu and choose **Record**. A red **REC** badge appears while it's running. To stop, press it again or choose **Stop recording**.

<Warning>
  **You only get one manual recording per call.** Once you press stop, you can't start recording again on that call, the button stops working until the call ends.

  If you're not sure whether you'll need it, leave it running.
</Warning>

You can't start recording before the other person has answered, or while they're on hold. The record button is greyed out until the call is connected and off hold.

## Telling the other person they're being recorded

Each number has a setting called **Call recording notification**, right below **Auto-record calls**.

Turn it on, and Dialbird plays an audible notification into the call when recording starts, and again when it stops.

It's simply on or off. You can't change the sound or record your own message.

<Warning>
  The law on recording calls is different in every country, and in some places everyone on the call has to agree to it first.

  Dialbird gives you the tool. Making sure you're following the rules where you are is up to you. If you're not sure, take advice.
</Warning>

## Listening back

Every recording is saved to the chat with that person, attached to the call it came from. Press play to listen back whenever you need it, even weeks later.

If a call produced more than one recording (for example after a transfer), they're grouped together as **Recordings** with a count, and you can open each one.

Click the **⋯** on the player and you can:

* **Download Recording**, to save it to your computer.
* **Copy link**.
* **Delete Recording**.

There's no separate list of recordings. They stay with the conversation they came from, so to find one, just open the chat with that customer.

<Note>
  **Needs checking:** confirm whether recordings are deleted after a certain time, and whether there's a limit on how long a recording can be.
</Note>
